Before each concert the Hungarian-American keyboardist Adelbert ‘The Behemoth’ Tóth was fond of reciting these ringing words from the Book of Job: “Look at Behemoth… It ranks fi rst among the works of God”. So, not exactly a wall fl ower. Not short on self-belief. In fact, he was generously endowed in that department. Tóth liked things big: his sound, his instruments, his compositions. The sound came from increasingly extensive banks of keyboards; at his last live gig (more of which later) he racked up Korgs like a drunk racks up bar bills: M1, Wavestation, Prophecy, Polysix, Trinity, all topped off with a vintage Donca- Matic. Compositions were overblown, with titles to match: ‘Mermaids Caressing the Shores of Lake Balaton with Arms of Incredulity’. He collaborated with György Ligeti (although Ligeti wasn’t aware of this) and composed fi lm music for Kubrick (though Kubrick wasn’t aware of this either). Pronouncements 1992, his last studio album, is an open ended extravaganza of noises with DSP effects aplenty. Pitch bend and modulation wheel are used to cataclysmic effect. And so that brings us to the “tragedy” of his last live appearance. By this stage of his career, Tóth's ego had become so gargantuan he wanted more of everything. And he got it - a mind-boggling array of sounds that stunned his audiences. But how did he get it? Well, Tóth had taken to employing the Horváth twins, a pair of conservatoire-trained dwarves, dressing them in balaclavas and black jumpsuits (making them invisible to the audience) and have them operate a shin-height sub-level of keyboards. Tóth being Tóth he came on like a two-bit dictator, never acknowledging their considerable contribution. Finally, the twins snapped. During a bombastic encore at an outdoor arena in Budapest Tóth heel-kicked the brothers like a jockey in the fi nal furlong, for which encouragement he got bit on the calves and dragged off his stool. Then they jumped up and down on his hands. “How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle!” says Samuel in the good book.
