For the last quarter of a century, Belgian trio Aka Moon have managed to pull off the considerable feat of always sounding exactly like themselves, while constantly exploring new sounds with an ever-changing cast of collaborators from around the world. Starting out in 1992 with a self-titled debut album, altosaxophonist Fabrizio Cassol, bassist Michel Hatzigeorgiou and drummer Stéphane Galland forged a spiky, high-energy instrumental approach that injected a punkish, youthful energy into the fractured funk of M-Base innovators such as Steve Coleman. Subsequent albums found them broadening their palette by incorporating various different sounds: Indian percussion and soaring bansuri flute; Senegalese drumming; Malian rhythms; Balkan folksong; Arabic classical music; and even a 12-DJ turntable orchestra. Yet, despite these far-flung, quixotic adventures, they've retained a heavily muscled underlay of keen instrumentality, whether touching on amplified fusion with electric guitar and Fender Rhodes or leaning even closer to their M-Base influences by teaming up with trombonist Robin Eubanks. The 20-disc Constellation Box provides an exhaustive – and somewhat exhausting – overview of all these approaches by including every Aka Moon album released between 1992 and 2015. For the curious newcomer it's an absolute treasure trove. Now, released in 2017, marks a return to the original trio formation, and finds the energy of the three main protagonists largely undiminished as they dig into complicated metres and hyper-caffeinated riffs, while Cassol's sax seems to have absorbed some of the exoticism of erstwhile collaborators, displaying an ineffable tinge of eastern sonorities. The adventure continues.
