Friday Night In San Francisco is of course the stuff of legend, an album that not only propelled the three featured stars beyond their worlds of flamenco and jazz and onto a wider stage, but also brought the acoustic guitar, nylon or steel stringed, and classical flamenco into fresh focus.

Di Meola and Impex pieced this release together from tapes of what was the final night of concerts. One bonus is that all the material is different from the Friday night session. Moreover, there's richer emphasis on De Lucia's work. Although bottom- billed, his work, especially rhythmically, cements the programme. He has a gorgeous solo piece, ‘Monasterio de Sal’, exhibiting his own forays into ‘New Flamenco’, which he did so much to create, not without a little controversy. Other stand outs include a breakneck ‘Splendido Sundance’, so typical of Di Meola of the time. Not perhaps the most subtle, but certainly dramatic.

Most satisfying, however, is a 13-minute take on McLaughlin's ‘Meeting of the Spirits’ which has a more moderate pace, and crucially a range of dynamics not so prevalent in the other songs. And of course there's space a plenty for the three to solo in their own styles but also to spark off each other.

A vision from another time, another whole sound world, and of course De Lucia is sadly missed: but still a concert and a trio to savour.
