New Zealander Alan Broadbent moved to the USA to study at Berklee College of Music and on graduating became an essential cog in Woody Herman’s 1971-75 Orchestra as one of Herman’s finest pianists and a composer and arranger that essentially he shaped the character of the band during his tenure. Then followed a career as a first call session musician and arranger, mainly on the West Coast, but he remained true to his jazz roots, as an impressive discography attests, including a charter member of Charlie Haden’s Quartet West. Dave Brubeck was a formative influence so his reimagining of 10 Brubeck compositions (plus one by Brubeck’s brother Howard) for strings and jazz trio is a labour of love. It shows; having arranged for an 'A' list of music celebrities from Barbara Streisand, Diana Krall, Natalie Cole, Jane Monheidt, Linda Ronstadt et all, he gets to indulge himself, and drawing on years of accumulated wisdom recasts some of Brubeck’s best known compositions – ‘The Duke’, ‘Mr. Meadowlark’, ‘Blue Rondo A La Turk’, ‘In Your Own Sweet Way’ –along with the lesser known, ‘Theme for June’, ‘Summer Song’, and ‘One Moment Worth Years’, in imaginative settings. Throughout his immaculate and widely admired piano playing shines.
