This is a follow-up to New York Notes by the same trio and, like that album, it was recorded by bassist-engineer Harvie S during informal sessions at the leader's apartment. As noted in Peter Vacher's review of the previous set (Jazzwise 243), Broadbent has had a distinguished career as a composer-arranger for everybody from Natalie Cole to Charlie Haden, in whose Quartet West he also played, while in this country he's latterly better known through his songwriting collaboration with Georgia Mancio.

What's been less remarked upon is the brilliance and inventiveness of his actual piano playing, which is well and truly exploited in this trio setting. The wide repertoire is something to marvel at too, with adjacent tracks by Lil Hardin and Paul Desmond, plus other tunes from Hoagy Carmichael and Coltrane; as well as a waltz original by the leader, there's also a gentle ‘free improv’ called ‘Moonstones’ that turns out to be based on ‘Milestones’. Although there are brief spots for the other members – one track even ends on a bass solo – this is very much Broadbent's show. Thanks to the overall relaxation, he often unleashes some superfluent phraseology (in both hands), nowhere more so than in a version of ‘Lennie's Pennies’ written by his one-time teacher Lennie Tristano.
