Although something of a divide opened up between fusion and bebop in the early 1970s, they were never mutually exclusive, as this enjoyable album from the period underlines. Sideman to the great and good – Trane to Yusef via Rollins and Gordon – Heath is a drummer who can swing hard but here he shows his versatility on a set that scores well for its smart bridge building between acoustic and electric vocabs, with Kenny Barron's Rhodes being an effectively subtle presence. As the title suggests Afrocentricity is the order of the day, and there is a strong undercurrent of the funky modalism of a Lateef on some of the material. The compositions are sufficiently engaging but the soloists, particularly Jimmy Heath and the underrated Ted Dunbar on guitar, are also a major attraction. Interesting album from a great bandleader.
