This sleekly-conceived, coolly- executed disc from London-based, Italian-born saxophonist Aldevis Tibaldi is something of a throwback a very welcome throwback, mind – to the glories and inspirations of mid- century jazz: a studio album, it was recorded live, in a single take, using analogue equipment, and projects an engaging late-night ambience. Tibaldi has performed with the likes of Paloma Faith and the Guillemots from the pop world, as well as jazz figures such as John Eacott, who joins him here. The majority of the cuts are originals, but the covers including Ellington’s ‘Black and Tan Fantasy’ and Mingus’s ‘Weird Nightmare’ – offer a clue to the range of the leader’s influences. Opener ‘Hunting Goose’ floats great unison work and sparky exchanges from Eacott and Tibaldi, including some characterful growls, on a buoyant backline beat. Most of the tracks are performed as a sextet, though a handful – ‘Do Not Panic’, for instance are arranged for trio.
