There is a fine line between pleasant and underwhelming, and unfortunately McCabe's quartet crosses it one time too many here. It's not that the players don't cohere or that the material is mediocre per se, but the programme, even after a second or third listen, doesn't produce a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Things peak on the title track, a tasty piece of mid tempo swing in which the ebb and flow of the rhythm section, the carefully placed regulations of attack and the well handled statements of the leader make for a satisfying five minutes. But elsewhere, it's all simply breezy as to be inconsequential, as is the case of the lengthy reprise of ‘Good Morning Heartache’, which, although given a mildly Art Pepperish bite, lumbers leadenly rather than skips on its mild samba implications. As a writer, McCabe's spirited straightahead tunes have their virtues but the roads down which he and his cohorts travel could do with more forks, both from a rhythmic and harmonic point of view, which is something a band of this undeniable quality would be more than capable of negotiating.
