Pianist Alexander Von Schlippenbach is a grandmaster of the European free jazz movement, a musician who has championed the form since its inception in the mid1960s – as well as being the leader of the Globe Unity Orchestra. In 2016, the latest version of this large group ensemble came together at the Jazzfest in Berlin, Germany for a musical celebration that would mark their half-century together as a working orchestra. With a constantly shifting line-up, the Globe Unity Orchestra is made up of musicians from several generations and nationalities. There are, however, certain members who seem to have become permanent fixtures within the group – such as trumpet player Manfred Schoof, drummers Paul Lovens and Paul Lytton, and saxophonist Evan Parker. It is Parker that provides the standout solo of this set, slowly guided in by Schlippenbach's deft keyboard trilling, Parker lets loose a short, intensely complex soprano sax salvo that almost brings the house down. As the rest of the group crowd in behind him one is reminded of Sun Ra's early Arkestra recordings, where a genuine sense of history, fulfilment and experimentation is present in the music, driven on and encouraged by the enthusiasm of their leader.
