At 38, Alexi Tuomarila remains comparatively under-appreciated in the UK. That's not so much the case in Continental Europe, where he performs regularly with a number of highly rated combos. A sideman for Tomasz Stańko among others, he also leads a particularly good trio of his own, who in jazz terms sit somewhere between Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett, with the odd hint of E.S.T. Scandi-jazzness thrown in for good measure. This is their second album, and their first for prestigious UK-based boutique label Edition. It's a disc of Nordic mood-pieces, the Finnish folk-tinged melancholy of the (distinctly hummable) melodies, buoyed by some of the most inventive rhythm work you're likely to hear all year in a trio context. Recorded in Lisbon (hence the title), it features nine originals contributed by the players and adds the extra musical colours of guitarist André Fernandes on a handful of cuts. Tuomarila is a player of tremendous flair and well worth discovering.
