Lauded Cuban pianist and composer Rodriguez gives us an album named after the national bird of Cuba, a creature that will die of sadness if caged. Cross-pollination and boundaries-down freedom are key here, with collaborators from France, Lebanon, Cameroon, Spain and India sprinkling their global stardust over a work that, while ambitious in its scope, retains the sort of intimacy that comes with a basis in improvisation; Keith Jarrett's The Köln Concert has long been a benchmark. First-time use of voices is applied deftly, with Richard Bona's mellifluous intonations lifting his own Cameroonian-take on Eliseo Grenet's ‘Ay, Mama Ines’ and French-Cuban twins Ibeyi lending sweet harmonies to ‘Yemaya’ and ‘Sabana Blancas’. Indian-American singer Ganayva Doraiswamy emotes wordlessly on the title track, while Ibrahim Maalouf's virtuoso trumpet takes ‘Venga La Esperanza’ by trova legend Silvio Rodriguez up to jazz heaven. Rodriguez holds onto his Cuban roots as he tackles everything from Bach and Piazzolla to five originals that really let him fly.
