As the title suggests, the music on this disc is about as stripped back as it gets: just voice and piano, set down live in an analogue studio.
“Silje [Kåfjord] was standing right next to me”, recalls Bernt Moen, “and you can hear her moving around the microphone for the dynamics and all the mechanical noises of the superb upright piano I had the pleasure of playing. As honest as it can get. Just Silje and me playing together”.
The songs – all written by Kåfjord, with the exception of ‘Stranger’, which was co-written by Moen – are fairly naked in their exploration of human experiences and emotions too. ‘The Owl’ is upbeat, a hymn to confidence and self-belief; others, such as ‘Ocean’ and ‘Red’, a tribute to autumn, are more nuanced in mood. According to the liner notes, the songs were recorded in 2013 in Hamar, Norway, and mixed and mastered straightaway, and were then remastered in September 2023.
