Although vocalist Alicia and bassist Michael Olatuja are accomplished artists in their own right, their collaborations bring out the best in each other. On this enjoyable, often very danceable set they draw liberally on hi-life, afrobeat, soul, funk and jazz to create songs that move through various degrees of polyrhythmic complexity without sacrificing melodic richness along the way. The writing and arranging is consistently strong, peaking on the outstanding ‘Bright Side’, which sways beautifully in 6/8 to a crisp finger-picked guitar, over which ripples a gorgeous melody and wistful chorus.

Although Alicia and Michael are proven soloists, they exercise effective restraint in order to serve the material as effectively as possible and a piece such as ‘Leye’s Groove’ is the perfect example insofar as the airy backbeat and breathy vocal hook are enhanced by discreet, fleeting improvisations rather than being smothered by them. It’s almost a virtual meeting of Erykah Badu and Lionel Loueke.

The Olatujas make for an engagingly creative musical partnership insofar as they are two strong personalities that balance well in an excellent transatlantic band that features pianist Christian Sands, drummer Obed Calvaire and guitarist Femi Temowo.
