A three-time winner of the New York Nightlife Award for ‘Outstanding Jazz Vocalist’, and named by Tony Bennett as ‘my favourite singer’, I had the pleasure of seeing vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Allan Harris at the 2013 ReVoice! Festival. On that occasion, I recall being especially impressed by Harris' ballad singing (‘I Wish You Love’ was a highlight), so it comes as no surprise that his self-penned ballad ‘Miami’ – carried along by delicate guitar harmonics and subtle washes of impressionistic piano – is one of several standouts on this 13-track collection. Produced by Brian Bacchus (Norah Jones, Gregory Porter), as befits its title the album adroitly pulls you in a myriad of stylistic directions, from the deeply swinging opener ‘I Got A Lot Of Livin’ To Do’ and the latinified take on Kenny Rankin's ‘Catfish’, to the virtuosic Eddie Jefferson vocalise of ‘I've Got The Blues’. The impressive scope of Harris' deluxe baritone-tenor voice is highlighted on masterly reworkings of John Mayer's ‘Daughters’ and Acker Bilk's ‘Stranger on the Shore’.
