Queen, now 74, first made good in New York, before settling in Switzerland in 1979. Always impressive, he continues to appear around Europe and having issued a host of albums on Nilva, his own label, is now associated with Danish label Stunt.

Choosing to record in the US with two New York players hitherto unknown to him, Queen took a chance. That they came together without too much fuss is evident from the off with ‘Out of This World’, Holmes taking charge over Queen’s splashy drum accents, the intensity promising. The remaining dozen tracks then range from old standards to show songs, and on to a pair of Cedar Walton’s better-known originals. ‘It Ain’t Necessarily So’ has a nice back-beat feeling and stomps along engagingly, Queen driving hard, as Holmes flirts with the blues and Boller walks.

Jack Wilson’s ‘Waltz for Ahmad’ is softer and somewhat inconsequential while Waltons’ ‘Bleecker Street Theme’ has a Messengers- style groove, Queen intent on swing and Boller soloing ably before Queen raises his game on Walton’s ‘Firm Roots’, the momentum quite encouraging.

Of Holmes’ use of synthesiser on ‘Love will Find A Way’ the less said the better; mercifully this is a one-off. ‘Spartacus Love Theme’ is understated, classical almost in its solemnity while Anthony Newley’s ‘Feeling Good’ gets a bossa nova flourish and ‘Send In The Clowns’ is merely novel. To be candid, not a lot happens here; it’s more like a parlour social than a hot night out.
