Things never get too serious or heavy-sounding on this live recording, which marks the duo debut of clarinetist Anat Cohen and pianist Fred Hersch: a charming footloose-and-fancy-free quality sustains itself to the end. The performance was captured at the Healdsburg Jazz Festival in June 2016, and provides evidence of Cohen's lovely, liquid, swinging style while Hersch brings a variety of moods to the proceedings, subtle but never self-serving in his playing. Their rich musical imagination never falters as the pair dance through a series of originals – including Hersch's ‘A Lark’ and Cohen's ‘The Purple Piece’ – before beginning to digress into dappled, impressionistic takes on classics such as Billy Strayhorn's ‘Isfahan’. Their version of Fats Waller's ‘Jitterbug Waltz’ opens with an extended, slowed-down cat-and-mouse sequence that conjures the spirit of Tom and Jerry before clarinet and piano fall into step, while the encore is a wonderfully drowsy, seductively bluesy take on Duke Ellington's ‘Mood Indigo’.
