This writer isn't as ardent an admirer of contemporary European jazz as many of his reviewer colleagues, but these Danish musicians are really impressive. Mogensen, now in his forties, had the opportunity while studying at Berklee to play with some of the very finest American jazzmen and he has nearly 20 CDs as a leader under his belt. His debut album Taking Off featured the legendary tenor player Gary Thomas and so does this new recording made to promote a recent tour. Gary, sadly, doesn't make many records these days, but will be remembered for his several excellent albums on the Winter & Winter label. Now a comparative veteran, he's mellowed a little and may have lost some of his earlier aggression, but still has that instantly identifiable dog-harrying-a-bone type of conception that makes his playing unique. Mogensen himself is a wonderful drummer: subtle, supportive and swinging. He's also a talented composer, contributing seven songs to the session with the opening modal ‘Daikan-Yance’ and the later ‘Copley Place’ especially enjoyable, while the brief plaintive ‘Legacy’ shows off his more sensitive side. Daniel Franck is a superb bass player whose solos are always arresting, while Carl Winther is an outstanding modern pianist. Perhaps a second horn on a couple of tracks might have been beneficial, but a thoroughly satisfying session nevertheless.
