Whirlwind Records is run by the bassist and promoter Michael Janisch, an American expat who knows how to make things happen. Here he’s happened on a real gem. Andre Canniere is a young trumpeter/composer, a more recent arrival than Janisch from the New York scene, moving to the UK in 2008. This very impressive debut and Canniere’s set of originals from the word go demonstrate rock music’s rhythmic force and echoes jazz-rock new wavers Get the Blessing as well as a creative lyricism reminiscent of the young Pat Metheny Group, Andre Canniere is a versatile, communicative trumpeter whose solos are never dull. The band play some, especially impressive drummer Chris Vatalaro’s Billy Cobham-style fills, though there are also many genuinely gentler moments of mystery and melody. It’s a recording with a lot of thinking put into the arrangements but it has an extrovert’s flair. One of the best debut recordings in a long time.
