This is Motis's album in effect, her sweet-sounding vocals a constant feature as is her bright-sounding trumpet, boppish in tone but mostly mainstream in the phrasing she adopts. Hamilton embroiders each piece in his own unique way, languid at times but always focussed, his tone and phrase construction combining to make his interjections seem like smallscale gems. Motis reminds me vocally of a lighter (aka younger) version of Tina May, musical and utterly relaxed as she sings, Traver's guitar setting the mood on the rather exquisite Jobim bossa ‘Menitacao’, Hamilton sinuous in the approved Getz-ian manner ahead of Terraza's nimble play on the harmonies. Adding Hamilton to their line-up for their first-ever live recording was a masterstroke for this quintet for he raises the game for everyone here, much to the Barcelona audience's delight. I didn't know what to expect but the outcomes are pleasing throughout, and just to hear Hamilton pick-up from Motis's Chet Baker-ish vocal on ‘I Fall I sn Love To o Easily’ is worth the price of admission alone, the DVD merely adding to the pleasure of the encounter. Classy music.
