Andreas Schaerer delivers what must be one of the finest mouth trumpet solos of the year on ‘Multitasking’ – in truth, I haven’t heard many other such solos these past 12 months (it’s been a disappointing year in that respect), but the Swiss vocalist’s impressive technique ought to come as no surprise as he is already a noted exponent of the mouth-trumpeting art. (His solo on ‘Piercing Love’ is pretty good too.) Schaerer – who also likes to pop and click, scat and beatbox – is in measured, though still highly expressive, mode on this very engaging, innovative song-based set. He’s played alongside Finnish guitarist Kalle Kalima for some years in the quartet A Novel Of Anomaly, but this project puts the pair centre stage, performing tunes that began as ideas provided by one or the other (and Kalima’s wife, Essi) and then developed together in the studio. ‘Invitee’ Tim Lefebvre provides electric and acoustic bass – including a solo intro on ‘Piercing Love’. Kalima provides a wide range of moods, again moving between electric and acoustic guitars, and is terrific on the generally terrific ‘Trigger’.
