Although the veteran has made a string of excellent group albums in the course of his six-decade career he remains a consummate exponent of the art of singing and accompanying himself on piano. In fact his keyboard chops are well above average, and here on a string of Great American songbook staples such as ‘Love For Sale’, ‘My Foolish Heart’ and ‘Good Morning Heartache’, Bey is simply in his element. However, he has always been a fine composer in his own right as well as a selector of less than obvious Broadway material, so alongside his thought-provoking ‘Jealousy’ there is the obscure Arlen number ‘I've Got A Right To Sing The Blues’. The former is typical Bey: meaningful lyric and dark, slightly unsettling harmony, while the latter is a gorgeous melody handled with consummate delicacy. Bey's baritone has lost none of its power but he is making a virtue of poise in his delivery these days, his voice sometimes just a warm flicker that is intimately conversational, as if he is singing as much about us as he is himself.
