Formidable multi-tasker Anthony Joseph – British-Trinidadian bandleader, poet, academic, novelist, more – went back to the source to realise this ambitious and timely project, at once a celebration of Trinidad's fecund musicality and a middle finger to those who unleashed the Windrush scandal. Buoyed by right-hand men including saxophonist Jason Yarde, who produces and arranges, and with a local Port of Spain crew adding steel pan, soca and rapso flavours to Joseph's intersecting Caribbean soul, jazz and funk, those stentorian spoken words feel more oracle-like than ever. Steel pan and strings weave glittering, swerving paths through heavy horns, percussion breaks and thoughtful, delicate flourishes, with Joseph declaiming in patois delivered with poise and weighted with meaning. Guest vocalists including Joseph's daughter Meena and Trinidadian rapso legend Brother Resistance enliven 11 tracks, adding texture to narratives that tell of ancestral memories, dark sea voyages to London and the denizens of Trinidad: people of the sun.
