In 2007 the New York-based Mexican drummer Antonio Sánchez signed for the prestigious Italian label Cam Jazz. The drummer who made his name in the Pat Metheny group hasn't had a settled line up since releasing his debut Migrations that year. Things stay that way on his fourth album, a 2-CD set, in which he lines up a trio of trios of world-class American musicians to perform mostly his originals with just a single jazz standard on each session. He has never played with Brad Mehldau previously but, with the addition of bassist Matt Brewer, they achieve a beautifully chilled and flowing ensemble dialogue. The second disc features bassist Christian McBride whom Sánchez has partnered in the Pat Metheny trio, and this set has a crunchier, rocky edge – Sánchez's original ‘Rooney and Vinski’ is especially cookin' – inevitably perhaps with guitarist John Scofield in the lead improvising role. The third and final session features saxophonist Joe Lovano and bassist John Patitucci and there's a more intense, hustle about the set. It rounds off an interestingly diverse, high-quality set of contemporary mainstream jazz.
