Ari Hoenig is an extremely interesting musician. As a drummer, he's not only respected for his tasteful and original approach, but also for the special way in which he tunes his kit. As a sideman, he's worked with the likes of Mike Stern, David Liebman and Chris Potter and as a leader, he recorded his first album in 2008 called Kinetic Hues for the Smalls label, as it was then known. His Punkbop band plays Hoenig's current kind of compositions with electronics often heavily involved. All the arrangements are pretty complex in the way they mix up melody, time signatures and rhythmic patterns in general, with Hoenig's masterful drums dictating and directing the many different twists and turns. Guitarist Kreisberg has been associated with Hoenig for about eight years and is a much underrated player. His sound is as crisp and clean as ever. His chordwork is outstanding. Precise, but never stiff. He seems to have found a perfect partner in the UK's Will Vinson, who is quickly gaining an excellent reputation in NYC circles, as also witnessed on Kreisberg's latest Criss Cross album. Armenian pianist Hamasyan and one-time Roy Hargrove bassist Boller fill their roles in the Heonig hurly-burly with intelligence and good taste. All six tracks will not only hold your attention, but will get you as involved in the time-shifting arrangements as the musicians themselves. The recorded sound is superb.
