Wherever you look in Blakey’s output, the product is impressive and this selection is no exception. The Blue Note albums Moanin’, The Big Beat and Night In Tunisia feature a consistent line-up with Morgan, Merritt and Timmons while, as well as the last-named contributing the title-track of the first album plus ‘Dat Dere’ and ‘So Tired’, the originals and occasional standards are always strong. Golson is a major contributor to Moanin’ in both his writing and playing, replaced by striking work from the early Shorter who was already notably prolific as composer, especially considering the originals he was also creating for his own early albums on VeeJay. More than a year on from the latest of the albums mentioned so far, Mosaic shows Shorter promoted to the band’s musical director after the replacement of Morgan and Timmons by Hubbard and Walton, and the addition to the texture of Fuller’s trombone. Possibly the strongest material so far, this has all originals, with Hubbard’s ‘Crisis’ bearing a certain resemblance to Coltrane’s ‘Spiral’ from Giant Steps.
