Art Farmer's CV might well be one of the most impressive in modern jazz, but, despite recording many well-received albums, he is one of a number of artists whose real worth has often been taken for granted. His is a warm and melodic sound that has expertly partnered such diverse players as Benny Golson, Art Pepper and Gerry Mulligan to cite just three.

Though musically ambitious, Farmer never sacrificed discretion for in-your-face showboating. A characteristic fully exemplified in his landmark Modern Art album that, with Benny Golson sharing front line duties (plus Bill Evans on piano), was a well received dry run for their soon-to-be-formed Jazztet and presented us with the rolling ‘Mox Nix’ plus the self-explanatory ‘Jubilation’. Also included is the rare session for which The Jazztet recorded six John Lewis compositions drastically rearranged for this session by the composer and included ‘Django’, ‘2 Degrees East, 3 Degrees West’ and ‘Odds Against Tomorrow’ to which the group added their own identifiable slant. All good stuff, not just for Farmer's expertise, but also for Golson's presence on two albums.
