Having staged a remarkable comeback after many years of tribulation that would have buried a lesser person, Art Pepper knew he was living on borrowed time and as a result seldom wasted a moment. Furthermore, as this and other posthumous live albums recorded in his sunset years proved, he wasn't about to compromise his talent. Working mainly with just a rhythm section, here Art is heard with one of his most sympathetic pianists Milcho Leviev who often had the ability to second-guess the leader. Any readers who enjoyed the pair when they played at Ronnie Scott's in June 1980 will have witnessed them at the top of their game and 10 months later they were still firing on all cylinders at Fat Tuesday's with a passion that few could match. Less than 10 months later Art was gone. The five selections performed here amount to a worthy musical epitaph. Commencing with a mischievous take on Monk's ‘Rhythm-A-Ning’ through a couple of blistering originals (‘Make A List, Make A Wish’ and ‘Red Car’), a winsome ‘Goodbye’ and a refreshing approach to ‘What Is This Thing Called Love?’ Mention should also be made of how both Mraz and Foster expertly heat up this well recorded set. Still sounds as fresh as when the tapes first rolled that April evening 34 years ago.
