With almost all of Art Pepper's past catalogue currently available at affordable prices, this 2-CD release in the French-based Quintessence series should appeal to curious first time buyers who may only know the starcrossed alto sax supremo by reputation and are seeking an actual taster. It's all good stuff, but far more enjoyment can be garnered by going straight to some of Pepper's key albums only hinted at here by the odd track. So first, check out the wondrous Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section here represented by ‘Imagination’ and ‘You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To’ then tell me you feel short changed. Also, anything where Shorty Rogers or Marty Paich are involved. Be warned, just one or two Pepper purchases won't nearly be enough. Just like yours truly you'll find yourself buying up almost everything in the racks!
