Re-imaging Jon Hassell and Japanese shakuhachi flute from the perspective of a Norwegian jazz musician at home with electronics, Arve Henriksen – now resident in Sweden – is one of the finest trumpeters of his generation. Yet though Henriksen has recorded sublimely understated, trumpetled albums for ECM and Rune Grammofon, he is also known for his often brilliant improv act Supersilent, in which he plays percussion and sings – and, if the mood takes him, shouts and screams. It is not too much of a surprise, then, that trumpet, at least in its recognisable state, is largely absent here (although when it does drift in, as lean, if not as mean, as Miles, it's glorious). Instead, these two albums, one of which has already been released as part of the Solidification box set, find Henriksen attempting a sort of solo version of Supersilent, as well as returning to the territory of his 2007 solo album Strjon. Comprising field recordings and largely recorded in airports and hotel rooms, Chron is relatively earthbound, while Cosmic Creation is billed as ‘an audio exploration of pure rapture, contemplation and universal origins’. What might sound like PR piffle seems less and less so as the record unspools slowly and epically, leaving Henriksen an electro-acoustic astronaut floating away as though into eternity.
