In the time of Covid-19, this might be as close as you'll get to a genuine, flesh-and-blood show – a live-in-the-studio session by Turkish neo-psych ensemble BaBa ZuLa, cut straight to disc and capturing the spirit of their live shows across a sprawling double album. The music's driving force is centred in the gnarled barbs of Osman Murat Ertel's electrified saz, the same microtonal twang that defined the classic sound of original Anadolu psych pioneers such as Moğollar and Bunalim back in the day. On longer cuts, like the two side-long, 15-minute pieces that comprise the first disc, Ertel really stretches out, spinning intricate, improvised curlicues over hypnotic, trance-inducing rhythms like an Anatolian Jerry Garcia. Active since 1996, BaBa ZuLa have forged a distinctive sound that combines the original shimmer of psychedelic Istanbul with modern electronics and dubwise studio production. In fact, dub remains an important touchstone, and they've collaborated with reggae heavyweights including Mad Professor and legendary rhythm section Sly and Robbie. With that in mind, it's a shame their own beats seem to be somewhat lacking in low-end oomph. Hazy beach-bar-friendly jams are all well and good, but sometimes you just want to feel your innards jiggle.
