Thompson would only want her music judged on its merits but to not acknowledge her extraordinary story would be perverse. It’s now 19 years since her diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease, 15 since her first ‘farewell tour’. There’s little chance of The Last Fandango getting toured, but the music remains fresh and vital, while her playing retains the edge and zest that has marked her out over 50 years in the business. Lest we forget, though, Paraphernalia are very much a band with their ensemble playing as tight but loose as ever (this is the line-up that graced Paraphernalia Live 05). Lemer’s keys have a romantic sweep on, the anything but, ‘Straitlaced’, Hiseman’s drums are admirably restrained throughout, supple on the township vibe of ‘Spring Fever’ while Billy Thompson’s contributions are consistently vivid.
But of course Thompson B remains the star: relaxedly joyous on ‘Spring Fever’, dark and testing on the closing, ominous ‘The Unseen Way’. The Last Fandango perhaps, but the dance goes on, the music doesn’t fade.
