Barry Green is a professor of jazz piano at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He's also the boss of Moletone Records, which is his platform for releasing this engaging trio disc, recorded in Brooklyn at the beginning of 2014. Before saying anything about it, I should first put in a mention for Green's preceding Moletone release, Babelfish, put together with vocalist Brigitte Beraha, percussionist Paul Clarvis and bassist Chris Laurence. Quite unusual and personal, and well worth seeking out, it is. And the good news – is great news pushing it? – is that Great News is well worth hearing too. There are a few standards (Thelonious Monk's ‘Off Minor’) and the odd left-field classic (John Martyn's ‘May You Never’ surely qualifies as left-field in a jazz-trio context at any rate), not to mention ‘Cheer Up Charlie’ by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley from the Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory film soundtrack. And then there are the originals, all played with dash and plenty of space for Gerald Cleaver and, in particular, Chris Cheek to spread out expressively. A record, and a label, to discover.
