Beady Belle – a collaboration between vocalist Beate Lech and bassist and future husband Marius Reksjø – made their Jazzland debut in 2001 with Home. Subsequently, Beate, or Beady, has become a major Jazzland artist in her own right. Imposing her personality on her material, she is a true performance artist and in order to ‘get’ what she is doing it's helpful to have seen her dynamic live performances. Here, however, on her latest album, she shines with a series of more considered performances of her own originals with crafty lyrics that reveal what a thoughtful artist she can be, such as on the track ‘Marbles’. Elsewhere tracks like ‘On My Own’ and ‘Incompatible’ have a simmering power that reveals the growth of an artist who long ago took up occupancy at the interface between popular culture and jazz, manipulating the tensions between each and to serve her artistic needs. Joshua Redman overdubs some tasty tenor while the rhythm section of Bugge Wesseltoft, Reuben Rogers and Gregory Hutchinson give Lech the kind of support singers dream of.
