This meeting between free-jazz drummer Beaver Harris and piano player Don Pullen is a forgotten classic that, thanks to the Corbett vs Dempsey label, has now been recovered, restored and made available again. Flanked by a stellar group of accompanying players (alongside the distinctive sound of Francis Haynes’ steel drums and a quartet of French horns), Beaver and Pullen rhythmically weave through a set that alternates between cool and free. The opening ‘Gorée’ acts as a showcase for the group, as Pullen and Harris make their presence felt before flinging wide open the creative doors to all-comers. The adjoining ‘Land Of The Pharaohs’ (with its obvious respectful nod to Sun Ra and his Arkestra) is a wild ride, ripped through with gusting horns, speeded-up Zappa-styled time signatures and some excellent soloing from the set’s main protagonists. Elsewhere, ‘Double Arc Jake’ is set to a quirky conga rhythm that soon dislocates into a bout of almost avant-classical piano playing from Pullen before the other players slowly resume their sonic discourse. Replete with killer cover art from UK cartoonist Ralph Steadman, this once ‘well kept secret’ is well worth seeking out.
