An impassioned musical plea for the Green agenda is argued by Lakatos in his liner notes: “Protect water, agricultural land, change to renewable energy resources,” he says. At last, jazz musicians getting political, which is usually a sign of a bit of passion is about to rear its head, but not in this case. Opening with ‘New World’, with Tim Reis on soprano, his solo quite simply extends beyond inspiration. Lakatos is a competent pianist but not one to capture the imagination, while Hurst and Royston do what they have to do with competence and little inspiration. ‘New Beginning’ is quite simply boring. The 16-minute-plus ‘Fight Over Water’ with a melody-free introduction between Lajos Kathy-Horváth and Bob Hurst is enough to test the patience of a saint before Hurst establishes time and Ries enters, now on tenor, with all the detachment of someone in their practice room.
