All musicians should dedicate at least one album to their mum. This one is dedicated to Huddersfield bassist and bandleader Ben Crosland's mother. In 1988 the pair went ‘for a spin in the motor’, as Mrs Crosland liked to say, driving from Cumbria up to the Solway Firth, and her son began to note down the evocative place names. It was only three decades later, however, as his mother approached the end of her life, that Crosland began to put tunes to his potent collection of potential titles. The result is a musical commemoration of that original trip, bolstered by research and a recent return revisit. The writing is rich in memorable melodies and the playing no less resonant and inventive: the trip starts off in fine jazz-rock fashion with ‘Driving North’, powered by Steve Lodder's keyboard work and Chris Allard's extended guitar break, slows to take in the sights with the lovely ‘Dulce Cor (Every Step of the Way)’, before reaching its final destination with ‘The Devil's Porridge’ – a lovely title and a fine way to end a delightful album.
