This is the elder sister title to the newly recorded Unfold Ordinary Mind by the clarinet specialistBen Goldberg. Simultaneously released, this one features a different line up recorded five years earlier. Goldberg first came to the attention of the downtown New York jazz cognoscenti with his New Klezmer trio, which was apparently an influence on John Zorn's Masada. Mentored by Steve Lacy, Goldberg has performed in Myra Melford's Be Bread, Tin Hat and in Nels Cline's Andrew Hill-dedicated New Monastery. He is from San Francisco originally but in both attitude and approach he's an honorary downtown New Yorker. So he covers a lot of bases and mixes them up in what you would have called, in those days at least, an irreverent way. The main inspiration for the album is his studies of Bach Chorales. Translated for jazz sextet, Goldberg's compositions bring together the baroque side of old west coast jazz with the collective organisation of New Orleans and free jazz ensemble playing; as well echoing the early Ornette Coleman groups. Top-level improvisers such as saxophonist Joshua Redman and trumpeter Ron Miles are here, but the emphasis is nearly always on interplay rather than individual soloing. The album title is obviously a play on the Bob Dylan song and the only non-original of the set is a hollering gospel-y rearrangement of Dylan's ‘Satisfied Mind’. Goldberg's themes are part-blues part-whimsy and very strong. The playing is fluent and never less than immaculate (Goldberg's occasional contra alto clarinet bass lines are quite a sonic treat) even if there are moments in which the recording could have done with being more rough around the edges.
