It may be 48 years old, and bring with it a host of memories, but this previously unknown and unissued music sounds as fresh and spontaneous as tomorrow. Soho Nights Vol.1 was from as late as 1968, but this is from Webster's first visit to Ronnie's which, in Dexter Gordon fashion, led to him staying on in Europe. During that stay, he perhaps became more self-indulgent and less driven whereas, here, he sounds as if he's trying to prove himself – needless to say, he succeeds. It's a surprise to hear him play ‘Night In Tunisia’ but, with absolute conviction, he moulds it to his own ends while, on a ‘Cotton Tail’ that's almost too fast for him to cope, you sense his unshakeable time-feel when responding to a wild far-out Tracey solo. Elsewhere, you hear him requesting applause for “piano man”, to save remembering the names of unknown sidemen, but Stan (whom he came to know well) sounds anything but anonymous and plays his heart out. There's so much to study here, in terms of Tracey's invention and Ben's varied articulation, that you’ll barely have time to read Simon Spillett's excellent notes.
