Bengt ‘Beches’ Berger, a Swedish jazz drummer, moved to India to study Indian classical music in the 1960s and to Ghana in the 1970s to study West African music. Subsequently he recorded with Don Cherry, no stranger to melding ethnic influences and jazz, and has accumulated a sizeable discography of music he's composed that's heavily influenced by Hindustani, Carnatic and West African music, jazz and Swedish folk sounds. If all that reads like a bit of a musical smorgasbord, then it all comes down to the immortal words of that old Jimmie Lunceford hit, that it ‘Tain't What You Do (It's The Way That You Do It)’. Beches Indian Brew had its genesis in a tour of India that combined his Swedish ensemble with local musicians from the Hindustani and Carnatic traditions and a Ewe drummer from Ghana. This album was recorded during a tour of Sweden last year that rounded out this ambitious project. It's more world music than jazz, very 1960s in concept (think of the Indian music/pop experiments by the likes of The Beatles, and the Indo-jazz fusions of Joe Harriott and John Mayer), but nevertheless has a certain charm, such as the delightfully titled ‘Flabby Dick’ featuring Thomas Gustafsson, Jonas Knutsson and Sir Thomas Jäderlund.
