A spotlight, please, for Beverley Beirne, the Yorkshire-based songstress whose superb alto voice has wowed punters everywhere from Rome to Ronnie Scott's, and whose third album is a joy. Having established her chops, and her inventive way with a standard, on her well-received 2010 debut Seasons of Love, Beirne let loose on 2015's Jazz Just Wants To Have Fun -which even had Noddy Holder commending her take on ‘Come On Feel The Noize.‘

Recorded around the same time, and featuring such guests as Brazilian guitarist Romero Lubambo and the late, revered saxophonist Duncan Lamont, Dream Dancer is a 12-track trip through tunes including opener ‘Let's Face the Music and Dance’ Lamont's Jobim tribute, ‘Old Brazil’ and a jazz-waltz version of Billy Strayhorn's ‘Day Dream’.

Much has been made of Beirne's phrasing, and her knack for Ella-like scats and Holiday-style runs – as deployed on songs re-imagined into new, fabulous shapes – is in evidence here.

Grammy-winning producer/keyboardist Jason Miles (Miles Davis, Marcus Miller, Luther Vandross) keeps things organic but polished, allowing Beirne room to really feel the music, to take chances that pay dividends. Highlights are many: Hoagy Carmichael's ‘Winter Moon’ is a deep-diving delight.
