In terms of current releases, this would be preferable to the single-CD Köln Concert 1976 (see Jazzwise 198), if only on the grounds of sound reproduction. The radio recording here (originally issued on two separate CDs by the France's Concert label) is exceptionally clear, with Gomez's work especially in the upper register more up-front than the piano at times. Musically, the relationship is more piano-dominated and the hectic urgency of some of Evans' faster solos seems to pull Gomez along in his wake. By squeezing some of the second set onto the first CD, Domino has made space for the only track commercially released with Tony Oxley replacing Morell (previously only available on a rare Enja LP commemorating a festival in Ljubljana). Their 12-minute version of ‘Nardis’ is more or less Evans as usual, with the exception that the long Oxley solo and the gradual reintroduction of the piano are out-of-tempo. Despite the familiar repertoire, the version of ‘Waltz For Debby’ begins with a solo chorus in an unusual key, as in Columbia's The Bill Evans Album which he was plugging on the early 1972 tour.
