The Matchball reissue seems to be identical to part of a 2CD set which was billed as being both the stereo and mono versions of the 1962 Evans/Jim Hall duo Undercurrent (see Jazzwise 238). Its second CD contained the whole of the Interplay album and part of its originally unissued follow-up with Zoot Sims replacing Hubbard, so hardly your average bonus material. These two sessions not only represented Evans returning to prominence after his post-LaFaro sabbatical, but the only instances from this period of him working with hornmen and sounding re-energised thereby. So definitely worthy of your attention, but there's no way the Harkit re-release should be mistaken for Resonance's recently discovered 1969 set Evans In England, since this stems from Bill's 1965 London debut including tracks from the very first night, all captured on Les Tomkins's Ferrograph. The sound is reasonably faithful but muted, especially the bass solos, and it's instructive to note the rapt silence of the audience. Perhaps this visit is best memoralised in the two BBC2 Jazz 625 shows, now freely available on YouTube.
