An interesting choice, since this wasn't an original album as such. Compiled by the new owners of Riverside after the label went bankrupt, it was the first LP to consist entirely of Evans compositions. The atmosphere of items such as ‘Interplay’ and the iconic ‘Peace Piece’ (which inspired Kind of Blue’s ‘Flamenco Sketches’) is markedly different and perhaps less compelling than the pianist's interpretations of standards – but nevertheless they're fascinating. It's odd, though, that the sleeve lists only the seven titles of the 1960s LP edition, when the inside cover shows eight more tracks added, including ‘Five’ and ‘Peri's Scope’, making this a complete representation of Evans originals from the Riverside period (omitting, of course, pieces written by Scott LaFaro or Earl Zindars). Even odder to see ‘featuring Cannonball Adderley’ on the front, when he's heard on only two items, but this is the only single album to contain both the quartet and the solo version of ‘Waltz For Debby’.
