I'm losing count of how many times I've reviewed some or all of this material, since it achieved public domain status a few years ago. The latest is an attempt to get nearly all the four original LPs by this famous line-up onto a 2CD package, giving a clear reminder of how groundbreaking they were. Combining the already matured Evans piano with his near contemporary Paul Motian, whom he'd played with on and off for the previous few years, and the younger but equally free-thinking Scott LaFaro and in a regular group brought out the best in each of them and created new ways of working together that influenced the Hancock-Carter-Williams rhythm-section, among many others. The two LPs from the Village Vanguard (LaFaro's final recording date), preceded by Explorations and their debut Portrait In Jazz, eventually spawned some extra takes not included here. But, for reasons of space, we also lose the originally issued Vanguard version of ‘Alice In Wonderland’, the Explorations ‘I Wish I Knew’ and Portrait's ‘Spring Is Here’ (which inspired the Gil Evans arrangement for Miles At Carnegie Hall). However, anyone not familiar with the material, and not wanting every last drop, will be blown away by what's here.
