Little needs to be said about this album, recorded live at New York's Village Vanguard in 1961, and documenting what might well be the finest acoustic jazz trio ever assembled. It – and Sunday At The Village Vanguard, taped on the same night but released eight months earlier – is a game-changing jazz recording.

This new reissue from Craft, part of its long-term OJC series, is an all-analogue one, and while Kevin Gray's master, which emphasises instrumental separation, is initially disconcerting, it really works. Evans’ lyrical tone is beautifully rendered and LaFaro's bass has a deep, glorious elasticity; there's a holographic realism to this cut, and you really feel you’re in the Vanguard on the night.

The result, I think, is one of the very best-sounding versions of this much-recycled album – it's certainly better than the original 1985 OJC, and far more satisfying than the many public-domain reissues; it's beautifully pressed too. Consequently at £35–£40, it's a must-buy for serious collectors and is bested only by the double 45rpm LP in the 2021 Analogue Productions box set (which now fetches four figure sums).
