Another well-filled reissue, combining two of the more unusual albums in Evans’ discography. The Jazz Collectors label clearly sees the selling point as What's New featuring Steig who, while getting his fusion career off the ground, was a regular sitter-in, thanks to previous work with Gomez. Mann too was about to break out with his own fusion when he organised Nirvana with Evans, whom he knew through sideman duties and who was slowly re-emerging after the death of Scott LaFaro. The pianist seems more reticent with Mann, an impression exaggerated by below-par reproduction on several tracks but, in their different ways, both flutists (to use the Stateside spelling) are out of Evans’ class in their striving for effect. Each session benefit from a minimum of preparation, relying largely on standards such as ‘Lover Man’ which appears on both The most unusual choices are Bill's themeless blues ‘Time Out For Chris’ (‘What's New’) and the famous Satie ‘Gymnopédie’ (‘Nirvana’), but it's a pleasure to hear Evanss creativity in a collaborative role.
