Lady in Satin was always controversial, teaming Billie with Ray Ellis’s orchestra, when her voice was past its best, yet drawing out some of the most poignant and emotive singing of her career. This issue has fewer bonus tracks than the American Jazz Classics reissue, but is well made with all the Stay With Me album added. Songs For Distingué Lovers gets Jazz Images’ beautiful packaging treatment, but if you can find Billie’s complete Edison/ Webster sessions on Lonehill they are musically more complete.
