Mystical reflections on England's green and pleasant land might have gone out of fashion after 1970s prog rock but the Devon-based composer and multi-instrumentalist Billy Bottle puts up a reasonable argument for its ongoing vitality on his new recording, Unrecorded Beam. On what's a novel release for the south west-based Russian label owner Leo Feigin's willfully obscure avant-garde Leo Records, Bottle makes his own pastoral brand of whimsical psych-folk, song-based music from the 1970s – including a nod to Canterbury prog – with an album of originals set to the paganist poetry of 19th century Renaissance man Henry David Thoreau. Vocals are by Martine Waltier, an expressive singer, a kind of cross between Kate Bush with June Tabor, who on occasion heads into more onomatopoetic avant garde improv territory. But Bottle's original songs are all about melody, and harmony that stretches way beyond the bog-standard three chords. Instrumentally flautist Vivien Goodwin-Darke's Jethro Tull-like solos lead the way while saxophonist Roz Harding and Mike Outram are the most noted jazz soloists on the gig.
