Childs' last new release, 2017's Rebirth, was greeted with considerable pleasure in Jazzwise 218 and with nothing less than a Grammy in the US. Meanwhile, his basic quartet with Steve Wilson impressed at the 2018 Cork Jazz Festival, and this follow-up album is equally absorbing.
The leader's mainly acoustic playing is by far the most prominent aspect of a varied programme that includes everything from a piano/bass duo version of the Rodgers/Hart standard ‘It Never Entered My Mind’ to dynamic Latin excursions such as ‘Dori’, dedicated to Brazilian songwriter Dori Cayymi. The most compelling track of all is perhaps ‘Do You Know My Name?’ which, inspired by the topic of human trafficking, is the only piece with lyrics and features frequent Childs collaborator Alicia Olatuja (profiled in Jazzwise 241). Two other items have wordless vocals, including a reworking of ‘Twilight Is Upon Us’ with the virtuosic Aubrey Johnson (the niece of Lyle Mays, one of Childs' influences), and also appearing briefly is flautist Pinderhughes, first heard over here with Christian Scott. Wilson likewise does not play on every track but is always compelling, and the whole album rewards repeated listening.
