Although Billy Cobham recorded this double album during a 1997 residency at the Compass Point Hotel in the Bahamas, it is only now being released. Cobham, as always, is a force of nature, propelling his band with crisp rolls, perfectly timed breaks and an impelling backbeat. But great drumming doesn’t necessarily make for a great CD, and this live double album somewhat stretches its resources. The material is classic fusion with heavy riffs, unison lines and whining leads, and the band are as tight as you’d expect from a genre pioneer like Billy Cobham. And Stefan Rademacher is solid, though a little too unswerving on bass guitar. But the overall lack of harmonic movement needs to be compensated for by outstanding solo work and deft rhythmic interplay in the middle, and this is somewhat lacking. Cobham doesn’t overpower his band and sounds great, but it shouldn’t be up to him to provide all the best moments of a 90minute set.
